How Does Psilocybin Form New Brain Associations?
Andrew Huberman says psilocybin increases serotonin massively, unmasks lateral connections in the brain, and allows new associations in a very condensed timeframe. Sometimes it works great, and sometimes it does not.
Drugs like SSRIs helped many people with true clinical grade OCD, then were over-prescribed for depression. They increase serotonin, which allows more neuroplasticity. Many people have turned against SSRIs, though the drugs still have a place. Psilocybin makes the same chemical move at a much larger scale. MDMA creates massive increases in neuromodulators in a specific context, raising serotonin and dopamine while someone works on pain, trauma, or depression. Talking through a problem day after day produces less plasticity. Therapy is still required. The step that creates the extra plasticity is putting serotonin through the roof with psilocybin, or raising serotonin and dopamine with MDMA, which opens a heightened opportunity for plasticity.
