Why Do People Think the Vagus Nerve Only Calms You Down?
Andrew Huberman says people picture vagus nerve stimulation as a way to calm down, while most vagal pathways are excited by that stimulation and the effect he describes is more alertness. Neuroscientists have known the alertness effect for a long time. A stimulator a little smaller than a penny, placed under the skin of the neck when someone is willing, is a common approach in depression treatment now, used against the sedation that can come with depression. The device does not have to go under the skull.
The change can show up in the room. His colleague Carl Deisseroth, whom he calls one of the greatest bioengineers alive, has described talking with a patient who was suicidally depressed. As Deisseroth increased the stimulation, she moved into a discussion about feeling willing enough to go out and apply for a job. Excitatory and inhibitory mechanisms are large enough, on his account, to change how a person perceives the outside world and the self.
