Why Will AI Companies Become Biotech Companies?

Andrew Huberman says Meta, OpenAI, and Anthropic are each going to be a biotech company, and that Elon's stated neural interest is Neuralink. Anyone who still files the labs under language models is, in his prediction, going to be surprised. The people building them already talk about neuroscience, often without formal training, and the goal they describe is reading from the brain and writing to it without opening the skull.

The practical problem is stimulating or quieting one area with both spatial and temporal precision, including graded signals rather than a simple on or off. He calls dynamic control of a person's own neural activity, using non-invasive tools plus AI to learn which pattern matches a given state, the real arms race in AI. He is a fan of the language models. He still treats them as less than the whole story. His Eight Sleep already changes temperature through the night to shift REM and deep sleep. He treats that as an early, indirect version of the same idea, one people already accept because it happens during sleep. The companies, in his account, want that kind of measurement and change for other states too, and neuroscience has to embrace it.

  1. How Does Andrew Huberman Feel on Seven Hours of Sleep?Andrew Huberman feels great on seven hours of sleep. Eight hours probably puts him into the day a little groggy. Six hours he can manage just fine.
  2. Why Does Heart Rate Have to Drop Before Sleep?Andrew Huberman says thoughts do not actually turn off until heart rate drops.
  3. Why Does Rocking Put People to Sleep Faster?Andrew Huberman says rocking puts people to sleep faster because side-to-side motion makes the eyes generate compensatory movements under closed lids, and the…
  4. What Is the Biggest Problem in Neuroscience?Andrew Huberman says the biggest problem in neuroscience is also the one he finds coolest: how to write to the nervous system without opening the skull, in…
  5. Why Do People Think the Vagus Nerve Only Calms You Down?Andrew Huberman says people picture vagus nerve stimulation as a way to calm down, while most vagal pathways are excited by that stimulation and the effect he…
  6. Why Do High Glucagon-like Peptide Doses Dull Drive?Andrew Huberman says ramping GLP levels up a thousandfold leaves people less hungry, and past a certain level they are less driven for other things too.
  7. Why Do Some Doctors Fear Whole Body Scans?Andrew Huberman posted on X a few weeks ago that if the cost of a whole body MRI comes down, he can imagine most people would want one.
  8. How Does Psilocybin Form New Brain Associations?Andrew Huberman says psilocybin increases serotonin massively, unmasks lateral connections in the brain, and allows new associations in a very condensed…
  9. Why Are Waking Brain States the Next Problem in Neuroscience?Andrew Huberman says waking brain states are the most important thing to resolve right now, and that the work is doable.
  10. Why Are Technologists Becoming Neuroscientists?Andrew Huberman says the technologists who used to only engineer things are becoming neuroscientists, and that the field has always gained when people arrive…
