Notes

  1. He brought chili, Chardonnay, and two rounds of turkey sandwiches.

  2. When the receptionist wheels in Chilean Chardonnay and two rounds of turkey sandwiches, Alice Levine asks why the meat is so specific. Why turkey rather than chicken? Jamie Morton says his dad, Rocky Flintstone, loves turkey. The book calls turkey sandwiches one of Belinda Blumenthal's many favorite late-night snacks. The hosts say turkey is an odd middle-of-the-night order unless it is the day after Christmas, so they read the detail as Rocky giving Belinda his own tastes. The receptionist also apologizes because the ice machine delayed the bottle.

  3. So far that day, she has been with four people.

  4. The young receptionist has brought a trolley with Chilean Chardonnay and turkey sandwiches. Belinda can feel how excited he is, but she is also hungry after two hours with Peter Rouse. She lets him go and says it would be a pity to waste such good wine and these wonderful sandwiches. The hosts call that a mood-killing swerve from a man whose excitement she has just remarked on. She asks whether he has eaten. The spread includes cheese and turkey. Her immediate move is to turn from the kiss to the food and wine he carried up.

  5. The young receptionist at The Horse and Jockey helps pull off Belinda's riding boots. She has lost count of how many times she has pulled those boots on and off in the past ten hours, and she thinks they are getting more supple each time. She then muses, "perhaps like her own body." Jamie, James, and Alice take that as Rocky comparing her body to the leather, more stretched after the day's encounters. The explicit line in the book is about the boots. The aside about her body is what the hosts jump on. She then tells him to ravish her.

  6. In "The Night Receptionist," Belinda decides this pleasure is for her and for her only. Jamie, James, and Alice contrast it with Peter Rouse and the other clients, whose encounters were tied to Steele's Pots and Pans. This one is not. The book says there are no business deals and no reputations to lose or offend, "just a plain, simple fucking session," and calls it a perfect way to end a busy working day. The hosts note she has had busier days, but they treat this as the rare scene that is not a sales call. It is also where the chapter ends.
