Back to Peter Thiel: “We Need to Hit the Accelerator as Hard as Possible” on AI, with Peter Thiel.
What Does Peter Thiel Mean by the Antichrist?
Peter Thiel means a medieval, biblical tyrant who would rule the whole world at the end of history. The tyrant would take power by talking about Armageddon and existential risk nonstop, convincing people the apocalypse was coming, not by creating an AI apocalypse. He said this about a year and a half earlier.
He puts a softly totalitarian one-world government on the same scale as the other existential risks. The Soviet Union could decay because an outside was left. If the whole world were like North Korea, no outside would be left, and that catastrophe might not be reversible. In late modernity, fear of science and technology would crystallize the politics, not a Dr. Strangelove or Edward Teller building nuclear bombs to conquer the world. He does not think Greta Thunberg is the Antichrist. Climate change is pretty serious, and it is the kind of problem that sounds as if it needs a global regulatory authority. The nuclear controls the world ended up with were more good than bad. A global authority is bad when nobody thinks it through.
Eliezer Yudkowsky's book If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies is detailed about AI risk and hand-wavy about the fix. Yudkowsky is clear that the technology has to be globally regulated and vague about how. Worrying about Armageddon and not about the Antichrist is a reason to worry more about the Antichrist.
