Why Do Agents Want Markdown Instead of Web Pages?
Guillermo Rauch says agents want Markdown instead of web pages because they do not need the fluff designed for human consumption. They do not need a layout. They need the structure, the signal, and the pure data and content. A lot of the web has already shifted toward Markdown instead of HTML. The companies with the best software factories that embrace AI and agents are the ones that are going to win, and Vercel is learning how to build the best agentic developer experience and the best agentic infrastructure.
A product can maximize the human experience and the agent experience at the same time, and the two can live in parallel. Every company is going to have to do that. Agents already make infrastructure choices. An agent says it is going to use Vercel, and sometimes explains why or compares other solutions. A lot of people tell the agent they trust it, because they are delegating the work. The new question is what it means to have been purchased by an agent.
People come in and say that three months ago an agent chose Vercel, and that what they need differs from what another customer would need. He leaves open whether they are debugging. The expectation is already that Vercel is an agent as well, so they do not want to talk to humans or click around. Someone who grows up knowing only interactions with agents will bring the same expectation to Vercel.com and want continuity. The web becomes agentic when a visit anywhere is conversational, highly adaptive, carries context, and conforms to the person.
