Do American Croissants Match 7-eleven in Copenhagen?
David Heinemeier Hansson lived in the United States for 20 years and has yet to eat a single croissant at the level of a 7-Eleven croissant in Copenhagen. In Denmark, 7-Eleven is an upscale convenience store that happens to make decent croissants.
Theories he has heard run all over the place: the water, the butter, the skill. None of them add up. If the butter were the reason, someone would simply import it. He thought he saw Danish butter in supermarkets under the name Lurpak, so butter cannot be the reason. Skill cannot be the reason either. Plenty of French people and Belgian people, the best croissant makers in the world, live in the United States. The other reply is that he has not gone to the right place. He has literally gone to 15 of the places called the right place, and every croissant was bad. Before he leaves the planet, he wants the reason the United States cannot make a proper croissant. He is not asking for a peak French croissant or a peak Belgian croissant. He is asking for the 7-Eleven croissant from Copenhagen, and he has considered hiring an investigative journalist to settle it.
