What Is the Memento Mori Calendar in Omarchy?
David Heinemeier Hansson built a memento mori Easter egg into the calendar. Click the clock to open it, and the first line shows how much of the year is already gone. Double-click that line, enter a birth year and how long you expect to live, and a second line shows how much of a life is already gone. Hovering the life line shows the words memento mori. Spoken with the feature, the phrase is remember death.
The year bar comes from an internet account called Years Progress, which updates every day. It read 63% done with 2026, and the calendar showed the same 63%. The life bar defaults to 90 years. He entered 1979 and thinks his own line sits at 62%. A fair number of people found the reminder morbid, so it stays an Easter egg behind a few clicks.
He wants the nudge that time is finite and should be used well. Children make the old lines feel true: his 13-year-old was one, then two, and that already felt like yesterday. Cliches help because the same experience has been shared before.
