How Does David Heinemeier Hansson Feel About AI?
David Heinemeier Hansson is incredibly excited about the role of AI in programming. Existential dread is not an emotion for him. It exists only as an intellectual idea. The feeling is pure unadulterated joy, optimism, and amazement that computers can now do programming.
A talk 13 months ago now feels like a different universe and a different era. Decades of progress arrived in the last nine months. He loves a line he thinks comes from Lenin: there are decades where nothing happens and weeks where decades happen. He compares the moment to being there when the Wright brothers took flight. The day before, the New York Times would write that flight was 10,000 years away. The day after, people were up in the skies, and a few years later planes were crossing the Atlantic.
The whole world changed. Being present for the shift is a blessing.
