How Did DreamWorks Compete With Disney?
Ben Gilbert and David Rosenthal describe DreamWorks, with Steven Spielberg and David Geffen, as a full-stack Disney competitor. The plan is live action, animation, music with David Geffen, television, and video games, the whole Disney flywheel minus the parks.
Universal signs on as the movie distributor, and headquarters go up on Universal's lot, which is also a theme park. DreamWorks Animation Studio is built in Glendale, just down the street from Disney, and Katzenberg starts recruiting Disney animators. One of the first recruits is Brenda Chapman, a member from CalArts and Room A113. DreamWorks Animation goes on to create Shrek, which does half a billion dollars at the box office. Disney has a full-stack competitor in its backyard for the first time.
Howard Ashman passed away from AIDS a couple of years earlier. A vacuum of Howard's presence sits in the animation department and in the films that follow.
