Why Did Disney Pull Its Movies Off Netflix?
Ben Gilbert and David Rosenthal say Disney announced an ESPN streaming service for 2018 and a Disney streaming service for 2019, and in the same announcement ended the Netflix deals. Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm would leave Netflix by 2019.
Netflix was already paying hundreds of millions of dollars a year, close to pure profit. Disney-wide operating income was about $15 billion, so that one deal was roughly two percent of company profit. Disney tore it up to start from zero and own the customer. The remaining ESPN cable cash is what made that possible, which is also why the ESPN Plus service that arrived in 2018 left the games people wanted on the cable channel.
