Why Did Disney Buy Lucasfilm?
Ben Gilbert and David Rosenthal say Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012 for another $4 billion, the same kind of bet as Marvel. Take one of the great modern myths, the original Star Wars saga, and give it a bigger canvas. Bob Iger was collecting top-tier franchises that still had room to run, and much of the payment was newly issued Disney stock.
Lucasfilm and Marvel cost dramatically less than Pixar. Lucasfilm had no movies in production, so paying less than Pixar was the right call. Star Wars did not turn out to have as much left to exploit. The Avengers side reached 37 films. Disney still owned the saga.
