Why Did Comcast Try to Buy Disney?
Ben Gilbert and David Rosenthal say Comcast, the Philadelphia cable company, made a hostile bid to buy Disney for $54 billion in Comcast stock. Bob Iger was already president and chief operating officer. The news landed on the morning of a Disney investor day meant to shore up Michael Eisner.
Comcast wanted ESPN. ESPN was its most important supplier, and the two sides fought every year over carriage rates. Owning ESPN would end that war. To many people the bid was also proof of how far Disney had fallen, even while the parks were recovering from September 11th, Pirates of the Caribbean was a hit, and ESPN was still crushing it.
