How Much Has the Lion King Musical Made?
David Rosenthal says the Lion King musical has grossed over $11 billion in total revenue, and calls the run the single highest grossing entertainment product in history in any medium.
The Lion King musical is still running. Broadway grosses over the past 30 years, plus the touring company, add up to more than $11 billion, ahead of film, music, TV, video games, and other Broadway shows. The biggest box office films, Avatar and Avengers Endgame, do $2.8 or $2.9 billion. The Lion King home video was a billion. The musical reaches $11 billion because it has been running for 30 years, packing the house around the world at a high ticket price. It plays in London and in New York, and it has a traveling company. On average the musical has generated $350 million in gross revenue for Disney every single year.
The result is an extra hit movie every year. Disney owns the musical outright and shares theater revenue, especially when the touring company plays theaters around the world, the same arrangement as any movie.
