Why Did Disney Buy Marvel for $4 Billion?
Ben Gilbert and David Rosenthal say Disney bought Marvel in 2009 for $4 billion, and the price looked contrarian. People heard $4 billion for a comic book company. Iron Man was already out, and a few other films had been hits, but nobody could see what Marvel would become inside Disney.
Marvel had already licensed its best-known characters away. Fox had the X-Men. Sony had Spider-Man. Superman and Batman sat at DC. The deal looked like leftover characters plus a movie Marvel had already made. Marvel Studios and Disney then built the shared cinematic universe that became the blueprint for turning one franchise into a universe.
