How Is Meta Scaling AI Past Five Gigawatts?
Mark Zuckerberg says you can measure a lab's compute strength by how big its largest single supercomputer is. Meta built a cluster it calls Prometheus, in Ohio, that is scaling to larger than a gigawatt. It is building a cluster it calls Hyperion, in Louisiana, that is going to scale to five gigawatts. Those plans predate Meta Superintelligence Labs and go back to the Llama program. The planning started in 2023 or 2024. The Louisiana site comes online over a couple of years.
Meta builds its own data centers, its own chips, and its own low-level infrastructure, and Zuckerberg treats the models as the next piece of that stack. A model can look like it appears overnight. The real shape is a long plan and long work streams that only meet at the end.
