Back to Muse Wonder: Zuckerberg and Wang's $100B AI, with Mark Zuckerberg & Alexandr Wang.
Why Is Meta's AI Spend Less Risky Than the Price Tag?
Mark Zuckerberg says Meta's huge AI spend is not as risky as the size of the numbers suggests, because Meta has a backstop for how it can use compute. Data centers had to be built years ahead to serve Muse, a product that did not exist yet. For the plan to miss, Meta has to fail and AI overall has to fail.
If AI works overall, plenty of other people want all of Meta's compute and are willing to pay. At a cost of 15 billion a gigawatt, Meta could get a lot more for the compute. Even if AI overall fails, Meta still has other productive uses for the compute. Meta was building inference capacity before it knew the product was going to be ready.
The build also followed a product bet. ChatGPT came first as the text-based assistant. Anthropic then got coding agents to work, and no one had built the personal consumer version.
