Why Does Jessica Hische Call ADHD a Superpower?
Jessica Hische calls ADHD a superpower because she wants her kids to harness it instead of treating it as a disability.
After Studio Works she became kind of a workaholic and started working after hours, something she had hardly done before. When her kids say she works a lot, she tells them she does it only because she loves the work and it makes her happy. Who they become is her biggest priority. Pursuing joy and creativity shows them the pursuit is worth it, and success can sit alongside chasing joy. The fluency takes self-knowledge about how you thrive and exposure to the things that make you thrive, almost without apology.
She and the household discovered they are neurodivergent, which she finds common in creative work, and she feels lucky her mind has to operate a certain way and at a certain pace. Rather than feel non-compliant with how the world works, she made her own world. Walking through how she navigated burnout showed her the tactics were coping, tools, and a universe built around her unique way of working. At least one of her kids, probably two, have ADHD. She does not treat it as a disability to deal with. She tells them they have a superpower to harness, they can do things other people cannot, and the stuff that trips them up can be dealt with. The aim is to pump the superpower into something they love to do.
