What Makes a Good Marketing Hire?
Hector Serrano says a good marketing hire is a hardworking person who has grown an account and made content, not the best grades or the best school. He and an intern, Tobin, both became strong marketers at Wispr Flow and did not look alike on a resume. He had a 2.5 GPA and played Division I sports. Tobin had a 4.0 and went to Waterloo. Tanay and Daniel hire for culture, for whether the person is a good human, and for one or two real signals, then they give that person time to fail. His own first seven months were messy. The team let him keep testing as long as he was learning.
The bar is plain. Has this person grown a following to at least 10,000 or 15,000, and have they made content so they understand creators? A small audience is evidence they know consistency, trends, editing, and filming. Instagram is a stronger signal than TikTok. TikTok followers can come from low-effort posts, and the people who follow an Instagram account are a better sign. YouTube counts too. Someone who can crack Instagram and YouTube can crack other platforms, especially if they are young. He had about 500 followers on X. Two weeks after he started posting there, he had about 18,000. Video is the harder skill. Sitting down to film is a different job from writing a short post.
