How Will AI Change Gates Foundation Health Work?

Bill Gates says AI will accelerate healthcare discovery and delivery across the remaining 19 years of the Gates Foundation. When the foundation started, 10 million children were dying every year. Now 5 million die. All of his resources over the next 19 years go toward eradicating diseases and cutting the deaths in half again, from 5 million to below 2.5 million.

The work is still about shortages. A vaccine has to be invented, drugs have to get less expensive, and pregnant women have to get medical advice. Two weeks of strategy reviews decide next year's spending on tuberculosis, HIV, and malaria. AI is already in use on drug discovery. An initiative with 60 partners, announced last month, aims to get African languages properly understood by the models. Better seeds, better livestock genetics, and weather forecasts for farmers in Africa are among the gains during the years the foundation has left. Faster discovery is not, on its own, enough to overcome fear of the models people meet today.
