Why Does Bill Gates Fear AI Without Safeguards?

Bill Gates says the near-term danger is very high for AI models where all the safeguards can be removed, and quite different from models monitored so cyber attackers and bioterrorists cannot exploit them to do gigantic harms. The risk is not one model versus another model.

Progress over the last year has been amazing: writing code and finding cyber flaws, reasoning in biology, forming relationships with kids or other people, and disrupting the job market. The incredible power that exists today means every one of the capabilities will happen, and society needs to be ready. AI is still a beneficial thing if it is shaped the right way, but the broad response has not been adequate to the speed of the challenge. He is very concerned the bad stuff will not be minimized and a lot of good stuff could come fairly slowly without the right management.
