Why Did Katie Dill Learn to Fly?
Katie Dill learned to fly after she sold her motorcycle, because keeping the bike felt hypocritical once she had kids. The last time she saw her father was a 2000-mile trip through the Rockies with his biker gang, and he passed away on a motorcycle. She rode a little longer because it still drew her to him. She did not think her father would have kept riding if she had been the one who died, and she wanted to be there for her family.
She still wanted the adrenaline, so flying turned into a new addiction built on learning. Going from knowing nothing to flying a plane over San Francisco showed her she can learn something wholly new, and she feels less intimidation about work she does not yet understand. Meditation never stuck. Every try became a to-do list. In the plane she has to stay in the moment and cannot dwell on work or on everything that could go wrong. She was nervous driving to the airport, then had to focus on flying once she was in the plane. She tells her team the same pattern shows up in a hard conversation: the nerves fall away once the conversation is actually underway.
